With the announced removal of Google Friend Connect for WordPress blogs on March 1st 2012, I thought it would be best to make a little post detailing other ways you can follow my blog as I will be removed from Google Friend Connect next year. I’ll be removing the widget from my blog very soon but leaving the account up for as long as I can.
If you would like to continue following Once Upon A Time in the GFC style, you can add me directly to your Blogger dashboard. Just simply click ‘add’ as pictured below and paste in the URL: http://dragonsandwhimsy.com/ And if you have a few to add, just click ‘add another’ and use the extra boxes. It may not be as direct as GFC but you will be following me in the same way if that’s what you like. (Thanks to Amanda for this tip!)
However, I have provided you guys with several different options. We all have different preferences and I’m not bothered about numbers so long as you’re happy with how things are.
My personal favourite will always be RSS. Every blog will have an RSS feed and this is the unique URL that lets Google Reader, or any other Feed Reader for that matter, pick up on your blog’s feed and publish your posts. The best thing about this method is having all of your favourite blogs in a nice list and it’s very easy to keep up on everybody without having to hop around. If you also like to use a reader to keep up on your blogs, then you’ll be looking for this button:
Or some variant with the same logo. If not, you will most likely be looking for the RSS feed. When you click this link, you should get a page that looks something like this:
If you use Google Reader then of course you’ll click the Google button. Basically just choose whichever reader appeals to you. If the feed URL doesn’t seem to work and comes up with a page of broken code, which I very often get, you should be able to just click ‘add a subscription’ and paste in the URL.
Twitter, Facebook, NetworkedBlogs, Goodreads
Also in the sidebar underneath ‘Follow Me’, you can find other ways to follow me. All of my blog posts are automatically sent to both Twitter and my blog’s Facebook page, and of course NetworkedBlogs, and I am a regular Twitter user. My reviews are always published to Goodreads so that is a viable way to follow those but you would of course miss out on the other stuff I like to post.
If you’d like my posts delivered to your inbox, I have an email subscription setup as well. I personally never got on with this method of following because I just end up deleting a lot of posts, but I know a lot of people like it and so it is there and all you need to do is input your email address and sign up. There will be a confirmation email as well.
I hope I have everything covered! If there’s some other method of following a blog that you like to use that I’m not, please feel free to let me know and I’ll see what I can do. As I say, I’m not bothered about the numbers so long as you guys are happy and I will never force you to follow me one way or the other.
