Happy… erm… July 30th, folk! Oh my gosh, where is Jae?! Yeah yeah. Apparently it’s really tough balancing blogging motivation with working full time as a News Editor for a gaming website. Who knew?! So posts are few and far between at the moment, especially with convention season and Summer stuff going on, not to mention mental health leaving me perpetually tired. But I’m not gone and I won’t be. I just need to find a way to keep myself motivated because blogging is a big part of my life and I’m not giving up that easily. I REFUSE.

In Comes Blaugust

Of course Belghast comes through, as always, with another Blaugust (I think I need a Blaugust folder in Feedly to go with my NBI one to keep up with all these bloggers.. gulp..) and as Shannon says I can’t use my MMOGames postings for Blaugust entries because it’s “cheating” or something (boo! :P) I need to find a way to keep myself.. regular .. for want of a better way to put that. Seriously.

Blaugust seems to be the perfect way to drag me back in, kicking and screaming, with the challenge of daily blogging throughout the month of August. If I don’t make it to 31, it’s all good. If I do, woohoo! The end goal is to participate with the community and get into the habit.

Meanwhile, my plan is to come up with 31 blogging prompts to add to the end of each of my posts throughout August, so that even on those days when we don’t have a clue what to write, there are ideas. If you have any ideas for blogging prompts, please do let me know!

Current Gaming Goals

So something I’ve been struggling with for a while now is focus. This is nothing new with me. I’ve always been slow and struggle to just focus on one thing, and if you ever catch my Forge streams you’ll notice that even in my gameplay, I tend to stop for a bit (usually Dan’s telling me about a new gun he got in Destiny or what Fun Haus have been up to recently) and just not move or I’ll start wandering off to see what’s around the corner. What one person can get done in an hour of gameplay seems to take me three and it’s frustrating for me.

What’s more, I game hope. Like a lot. So occasionally I’ll manage to get really into a game for a while, World of Warcraft has still be my biggest game for this. Then probably Rift. But otherwise, I’m all over the place! Now.. at the heart of things this is not a problem as long as I’m happy and enjoying myself, but at some point you have to consider that hopping from game to game and progressing in each one very slowly.. I miss out on a lot. That gets annoying. So in comes Izlain with the “Gamer To-Do List” challenge and I’m thinking I might have to hop on this because I need to find some focus. Also it’s blog content, I’m a fiend for organization, and yay more challenges!

He lists the Gamer To-Do Lists guidelines as:

  • Don’t add new items to the list until a previous item is removed.
  • Try to write about something that gets checked off the list as soon as you complete it so details are fresh in your mind.
  • Make your to-do list a reasonable size. I found a list around ten items in length is a nice round number. It also keeps you focused on core games.
  • Keep your entries semi-specific. “Leveling to 80″ is a long term goal (unless you’re close). “Clearing this zone” is more reasonable, and completable within the month (though this concept can carry on beyond Blaugust).

Going off of this and checking Izzy’s own list, I think a smaller list will be good. I love to have goals to aim for as they keep me focused and well.. kinda like a self-imposed quest or achievement log. BUT I’m not going to tell you my list now because that’s stealing away Blaugust content from myself!

Last Thing

I’ve pretty much spent my free time trying to find that focus. I’d decided that I would focus mainly on Elder Scrolls Online and Final Fantasy XIV, then I got the itch to check out the EverQuest 2 progression servers so added that one in, then I’ve got Fallout 3 on the go for the anti-social days. And of course I’ve been active on Twitter, as always, and uploading some of my screenies to Anook. I’ve also fiddled with the blog layout a wee bit since I last blogged with some help from the lovely Tilion (I still want to do more including fiddle with the sub-headings font and some of the code in quote stylings), and I’ve been making some new graphics! I’m quite pleased with my new Twitter header.

It’s nothing overly complicated. Just a brush, a few layers, and some screenies. But I’m no good with complicated so I keep it simple and wanted to have an image that represented me as a gamer, as cheesy as that sounds, so I plonked in the characters from the games I love the most. I probably would have done more but there were only four squares. 😉

So there ya have it. A blog post. Any advice on blogging when you just wanna sleep and/or explore Tamriel is always welcome! As are introductions from bloggers I don’t know yet. And as it is 10.30pm here and thus nearing midnight, happy Blaugust Eve!!
